Sparkling Sepia Costume

Well the name says it all! We have here a GORGEOUS little suit made of brown tweed flecked with gold lurex. Tailored and fitted to a pencil thin silhouette, SS is all about the details. A beige satin blouse with Peter Pan collar is trimmed with a long brown velvet ribbon tied at the neckline and rests over the larger lost boy collar of the jacket. Beneath this fitted jacket, the narrow skirt is mid-calf and pleated in the back. The hat is a two-toned cloche made of shaped felt and trimmed in a chin-length black veil. A chic ‘mink’ muff and two-toned oxfords keep the extremities warm with this striking suit of sparkling woolen tweed. Our delicious Club Upgrade doll Vee J. is not included. She’s just the lucky lady who gets to sparkle in this sepia.

Gene nabs the plum role in this three-piece satin finish cocktail suit. Styled with an abbreviated bolero jacket sporting three-quarter sleeves and an expansive circular collar, our trim suit is a lovely exercise in three-color harmony. The jacket and skirt are cut of the deepest shade of plum and paired with sparkling white in the satin blouse and accessories of white ‘leather’ gloves and smart pillbox hat. White, trimmed in black shoes and bag complete the accessories and a nosegay of small white blooms is pinned to the jacket or perhaps at the waistband of the skirt. Gene’s brunette pixie-cut is punctuated by gold earrings. It’s a smart girl in a smart suit that catches the plum role.

Madra is a blooming goddess in this festival of brilliant floral tones straight off the pages of 1954 Bazaar and onto the waiting form divine of our favorite Diva. This sumptuous gown of daffodil yellow taffeta features a ‘cloche skirt’, named so for the angled rise in the hem from back to front. A tiny fitted bodice is bowed beneath the bust and bourn aloft by the daring balloon skirt punctuated at the hemline with matching bows and lined in a striking deep fuchsia. ‘Diamonds’ virtually drip from the earlobes and collect at the throat into a sparkling necklace of multiple stones set in ‘silver’. Madra sports her latest cosmetic reincarnation with a new and ‘marvelous mouth’ and daringly winged eyelids beneath her elaborately bouffant, platinum coiffure. Her accessories include a silver evening bag and sparkling white opera length gloves embroidered in silver. Her yellow pumps are tied at the toes with matching yellow bows, a bit of poetry for the most flowery of frocks.

Perhaps there was a more beautiful dress there that night, but I doubt it. And maybe there was in the huge crowd a more beautiful woman there that warm summer evening. But at the ball that night, there was no other beautiful woman in attendance as beautifully dressed as Madra Lord. Nature and artifice combined perfectly in a bias cut confection. The fitted column of dusty pink satin is pleated at the criss-cross bodice into a halter neckline before disappearing altogether in the back into a diamante waterfall cascading from the neckline to a bare, lower back. The lavish skirt of this evening gown is cut and draped into an expanded train. Matching opera length gloves and a mile long white 'fox' stole combine with dramatic 'diamonds' at the wrist and ears for a look that gets looks, coming and going. Madra's sleek black marcel wave is the one dark note in this pastel dream that is tethered to the dance floor only by pink satin pumps trimmed in silver.

Black Calla is a dramatic 1930s' evening suit, long and lean like the sculptural blossom that is its namesake. The fitted jacket is cut of black faille and finished with satin cuffs and tapered waistband. The skirt is a form-fitting column of black satin, tapered through the thighs and flared into an inky black train. A sparkling white georgette blouse is long-sleeved with ruffles at the cuffs and collar, looking like nothing so much as bouquets of calla lilies. This lavishly ruffled neckline rests upon the circular faille lapels of the trim top. A "diamond" broach is worn at the bodice and matches the glittering earrings and hair clip. Black pumps, trimmed at the toes with jewels, are the finishing touch to Black Calla's ultra-sleek sophistication.

"C'est Moi" was one of the first things Madra Lord learned to say in France… and somehow it always seemed to apply. How could you blame Madra for thinking that people were looking at and talking about her, especially when she was dressed in this absolute symphony of cool grey tones? Starting at the top, the one hot note in the piece, Madra wears a marcel-waved titian bob, curling over the bow at the neckline of her georgette blouse. Over this lovely teal blouse is worn a form fitting dove grey satin jacket and a lavish display of silver fox pelts. Grey ribbon-laced oxfords peek from under the generous cuffs of the pastel and grey woolen plaid slacks. Repeatedly that day, Madra was photographed with one of her black-gloved hands dramatically touching the pearl earrings or the matching choker she wore. Cameras always loved Mada and she returned the favor.
