year all of our stars are getting the deluxe color treatment starting
with the 'Color Deal' girls. For all you collectors who have wanted
more color in the collection, we've created a group of dolls and fashions
for Gene and her friends inspired by the color-saturated productions
of the early 1950s. From basic dolls up, we've cornered the color-wheel
with our 'Color Deal'. The focus of our first mini-collection this year
is Madra Lord, finally getting the star billing she so richly deserves
with our 'Postcard From Cannes' suite. We're presenting Madra during
the early 1930s as a major star in her own right, long before Gene Marshall
accidently steals her spotlight. Dressed in a collection of achingly
beautiful 30s' styles, Madra sports fashions that range from dressy
slacks and hats to drop-dead gorgeous evening ensembles. Throw in a
few furs and a liberal dose of diamante' and you've got a "Postcard
From Cannes" that you'll save forever. |

Perhaps there
was a more beautiful dress there that night, but I doubt it. And maybe
there was in the huge crowd a more beautiful woman there that warm summer
evening. But at the ball that night, there was no other beautiful woman
in attendance as beautifully dressed as Madra Lord. Nature and artifice
combined perfectly in a bias cut confection. The fitted column of dusty
pink satin is pleated at the criss-cross bodice into a halter neckline
before disappearing altogether in the back into a diamante waterfall
cascading from the neckline to a bare, lower back. The lavish skirt
of this evening gown is cut and draped into an expanded train. Matching
opera length gloves and a mile long white 'fox' stole combine with dramatic
'diamonds' at the wrist and ears for a look that gets looks, coming
and going. Madra's sleek black marcel wave is the one dark note in this
pastel dream that is tethered to the dance floor only by pink satin
pumps trimmed in silver.

Black
Calla is a dramatic 1930s' evening suit, long and lean like the sculptural
blossom that is its namesake. The fitted jacket is cut of black faille
and finished with satin cuffs and tapered waistband. The skirt is a
form-fitting column of black satin, tapered through the thighs and flared
into an inky black train. A sparkling white georgette blouse is long-sleeved
with ruffles at the cuffs and collar, looking like nothing so much as
bouquets of calla lilies. This lavishly ruffled neckline rests upon
the circular faille lapels of the trim top. A "diamond" broach
is worn at the bodice and matches the glittering earrings and hair clip.
Black pumps, trimmed at the toes with jewels, are the finishing touch
to Black Calla's ultra-sleek sophistication. |

"C'est Moi" was one of the first things Madra Lord learned
to say in France… and somehow it always seemed to apply. How could
you blame Madra for thinking that people were looking at and talking
about her, especially when she was dressed in this absolute symphony
of cool grey tones? Starting at the top, the one hot note in the piece,
Madra wears a marcel-waved titian bob, curling over the bow at the neckline
of her georgette blouse. Over this lovely teal blouse is worn a form
fitting dove grey satin jacket and a lavish display of silver fox pelts.
Grey ribbon-laced oxfords peek from under the generous cuffs of the
pastel and grey woolen plaid slacks. Repeatedly that day, Madra was
photographed with one of her black-gloved hands dramatically touching
the pearl earrings or the matching choker she wore. Cameras always loved
Mada and she returned the favor. |

Riviera collection. After a morning of sunbathing au natural, you start
your afternoon on the balcony in a beautifully draped sleeveless satin
top and slender pants the shade of the deep pink bougainvillea spilling
from the trellis. For a leisurely stroll to a late lunch, you slip into
sparkling white oxfords trimmed with golden buckles and a quilted satin
coat, gored at the waist, buttoned down the front and flared into the
shape of a child's drawing of a dress. You carry your daffodil yellow
cloche in case there's a breeze. Lunch can last for hours and you have
just enough time to slip home and into the sweetest white dress, sleeveless
and pleated into a horizontal chevron at the dropped waist. You add
a recently acquired pearl and jewel choker to your neckline and your
early evening ensemble is ready for card-playing ex-patriots and cocktails.
Someone suggests dinner on his yacht, so you throw on a golden cardigan,
spangled in sequins and cut like a cozy sweater and after changing out
of your white pumps and into high-heel gold metallic sandals, you're
ready for the cool winds of fate, as well as the breeze on the bay. |
